What is Arthritis?

Arthritis

Arthritis is a condition that means inflammation of joints (“itis” in Latin means inflammation.) Arthritis can affect various joints in the body, including the spine. In the case of arthritis in the spine, it can lead to degeneration of the joints, causing stiffness, pain, and limited range of motion.

Chiropractors can play a role in helping patients with arthritis by providing non-invasive treatments that aim to reduce pain and improve joint function. Here are a few ways chiropractors may help:

  1. Spinal Manipulation : Chiropractors use manual techniques to improve range of motion to the joints of the spine and thus, improve joint mobility. By adjusting the spine, they aim to reduce pain and restore proper function to the affected joints.
  2. Exercise and stretching: Chiropractors may recommend specific exercises and stretches to help strengthen the muscles around the affected joints. This can help improve joint stability, reduce compensation in other joints and muscles and reduce pain.
  3. Lifestyle modifications: Chiropractors may provide guidance on lifestyle changes that can support joint health, such as maintaining a healthy weight, improving posture and avoiding activities that may exacerbate joint pain.
  4. Supplemental advice: Chiropractors may offer supplemental recommendations to support joint health such as chondroitin sulphate and glucosamine.
  5. Modalities: Chiropractors may use additional treatment modalities such as heat therapy, dry needling, cold therapy, or electrical stimulation to help reduce pain and inflammation in the affected joints.

It’s important to note that while chiropractic care can provide relief for arthritis symptoms and help improve joint function, it may not be able to reverse the degenerative changes associated with arthritis. However chiropractor may be able to slow down the rate at which arthritic change occurs through the above mentioned points. Chiropractors often work in conjunction with other healthcare professionals to provide comprehensive care for arthritic patients.

If you have specific concerns about your condition, it’s best to consult with a chiropractor or a healthcare professional who can provide personalised advice based on your individual needs.
