Migraines can affect vision, balance, concentration, mood, energy levels, and even the ability to function normally throughout the day. For some individuals, migraines occur occasionally, while for others they become a chronic and debilitating part of life.</p>    <p class="wp-block-paragraph">As chiropractors, we frequently see patients who have spent years trying to manage recurring headaches and migraines without fully understanding what may be contributing to them. While migraines can have many different triggers and underlying factors, addressing musculoskeletal dysfunction, stress, posture, and nervous system tension can play an important role in reducing the frequency and severity of symptoms.</p>    <h3 class="wp-block-heading alignwide"><strong>What Exactly Is a Migraine?</strong></h3>    <p class="wp-block-paragraph">A migraine is a neurological condition characterised by episodes of moderate to severe head pain, often accompanied by other symptoms such as nausea, light sensitivity, sound sensitivity, dizziness, and visual disturbances.</p>    <p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Migraines commonly present as:</strong></p>    <ul class="wp-block-list"> <li>Throbbing or pulsating pain</li>    <li>Pain on one side of the head (although it can occur on both sides)</li>    <li>Sensitivity to light, sound, or smells</li>    <li>Nausea or vomiting</li>    <li>Difficulty concentrating</li>    <li>Fatigue or brain fog</li>    <li>Neck tension or stiffness</li> </ul>    <p class="wp-block-paragraph">Migraine attacks can last anywhere from a few hours to several days, and many sufferers report feeling “hungover” or exhausted afterwards.</p>    <h3 class="wp-block-heading alignwide"><strong>The Different Stages of a Migraine</strong></h3>    <p class="wp-block-paragraph">Migraines often occur in phases, although not every person experiences every stage.</p>    <h4 class="wp-block-heading alignwide"><strong>1. Prodrome Phase</strong></h4>    <p class="wp-block-paragraph">This phase can begin hours or even days before the migraine itself. Many people notice subtle warning signs that something is “off.”</p>    <p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Common prodrome symptoms include:</strong></p>    <ul class="wp-block-list"> <li>Fatigue</li>    <li>Mood changes or irritability</li>    <li>Food cravings</li>    <li>Increased thirst</li>    <li>Neck stiffness</li>    <li>Difficulty concentrating</li>    <li>Frequent yawning</li> </ul>    <p class="wp-block-paragraph">This stage is the body’s early warning system and is often overlooked.</p>    <h4 class="wp-block-heading alignwide"><strong>2. Dysfunction, restricted movement, muscle tightness, or irritation in the neck may contribute to headache symptoms in some individuals.</p>    <p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Modern lifestyles also place significant strain on the neck and upper back. 										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Dry needling is a westernised treatment modality aimed at reducing muscle spasm, improving blood flow and reducing muscular pain and dysfunction. Dry needling should not be confused with acupuncture which is an eastern medicine technique aimed at stimulation of the meridians (energetic pathways) within the body.</p>    <p class="wp-block-paragraph">The application of dry needling involves the insertion of a sterile, stainless steel, small-gauged needle into the muscle/ tendon. Most often, you’ll hear your chiropractor refer to&nbsp; trigger points during the procedure. We aim to insert needles into trigger points which are found within your muscle belly. Trigger points are tight bands within a muscle which are suspended in a non resting state, known most commonly as a muscle spasm or “knot. “</p>    <p class="wp-block-paragraph">The goal of dry needling is to decrease pain and increase joint and muscular range of motion. Dry needling is very specific as it increases blood flow locally which contributes to healing.</p>    <h3 class="wp-block-heading alignwide"><strong>How does dry needling work?</strong></h3>    <p class="wp-block-paragraph">When a muscle is overused/overworked, an energy crises occurs. When this happens, your muscle fibres don’t receive enough blood supply and hence, are starved of oxygen and nutrients. Without adequate oxygen and nutrients, your muscle struggles to return to its resting state. The tissue near the trigger point becomes acidic, stimulating nerve sensitivity, and thus more pain and decreased range of motion is experienced. (We often hear patients using terms such as feeling “locked up” or “stuck” which refers to a muscle a spasm.)</p>    <p class="wp-block-paragraph">When we insert the needle, we temporarily create a trauma response, which stimulates an influx of blood flow back into that muscle. In order to get blood back into the affected muscle, a small prick and injury channel needs to be created.&nbsp; Thus, this <strong>trauma response is necessary for healing.</strong> This needle “prick” also stimulates your brain to release endorphins (which naturally decrease pain.) During the dry needling procedure you may feel a muscular contraction which is known as a local twitch response. This is a good sign as it indicates that the muscle is being stimulated.&nbsp;</p>    <p class="wp-block-paragraph">Once normal blood supply returns, oxygen and nutrient concentration increases and thus, the resting state of the muscle can then be achieved. Once this happens, there is a restoration of range of motion, decreased pain and improved joint function.</p>    <h3 class="wp-block-heading alignwide"><strong>When is dry needling used as treatment?:</strong></h3>    <ul class="wp-block-list"> <li>Cervical , thoracic or lumbar facet syndromes</li>    <li>TMJ syndrome (jaw)</li>    <li>“Pulled muscle”</li>    <li>Migraine and tension headaches</li>    <li>Whiplash</li>    <li>Spinal disc herniations as a supportive treatment</li>    <li>Pelvic pain</li>    <li>Carpal tunnel syndrome&nbsp;</li>    <li>Achilles tendinitis&nbsp;</li> </ul>    <p class="wp-block-paragraph"><em>Please contact us should you be suffering from pain in the spine and /or extremities. Traction is a therapeutic technique that can be used to assist patients with compressed nerves. It involves the application of a pulling force to the affected area, which helps to decompress the nerves and relieve pressure. The type of traction we use in the lower back is known as lumbar flexion distraction. </p>    <p class="wp-block-paragraph">When a nerve is compressed, traction maybe help by creating space between the vertebrae or joints, reducing the pressure on the nerves. This can help to alleviate pain and improve nerve function.</p>    <p class="wp-block-paragraph">There are different types of traction that can be used, depending on the specific condition and location of the compressed nerve. For example, cervical traction is used for neck-related nerve compression, while lumbar traction is used for lower back-related nerve compression. Traction can be applied manually by a healthcare professional or through the use of mechanical devices.</p>    <p class="wp-block-paragraph">Traction can be beneficial in various conditions that cause nerve compression, such as herniated discs, spinal stenosis, degenerative disc disease, and sciatica.
