Can visiting a chiropractor improve my running?

Chiropractic care can potentially improve your running performance in a variety of ways.

  1. Vertebral alignment: Chiropractors focus on spinal alignment and posture, which can enhance your running form and reduce the risk of injuries.
  2. Injury Prevention: Regular chiropractic adjustments and soft tissue therapies can help identify and address musculoskeletal issues before they develop into more serious injuries.
  3. Enhanced Mobility: Chiropractic care can improve joint mobility and flexibility, allowing for a better range of motion during your runs, thus preventing chronic overuse conditions like runners knee or ITB syndrome.
  4. Pain Relief: If you experience pain from previous injuries or overuse in sport, chiropractic treatments can help alleviate discomfort, enabling you to train more effectively.
  5. Overall Performance: By optimizing your body’s function, chiropractic care may contribute to improved endurance and efficiency while running by improving leg length discrepancies and asymmetry between the right and left hand side of one’s body.
  6. An improvement in leg length discrepancy: a leg length discrepancy (LLD) is when one leg is longer than the other. This can be caused by terrain discrepancies, driving, habits, structural. Having this issue whilst running can cause injuries on one side of your body, injuries to key areas like your lower spine and may affect the structural integrity of the knee and  hips.

Due to the repetitive nature of running, there is a heightened risk of developing injuries in multiple areas such as the knee, lower back, foot and shin area. Running for long periods and distances requires runners to get checked for any form of imbalance which naturally will occur with the training demands, terrain and sheer volume of the sport. This requirement may improve injuries which can get a runner out of the game for months.

It’s a good idea to consult with a chiropractor who has experience working with athletes to determine the best approach for your specific needs.

Here at Spina Vita, we pride ourselves in managing many runners and athletes through their sporting journeys.
